Occupational exposure standards for underground mines for super(222)Rn progeny are now under revision by MSHA. In view of these changes in the federal recommendations for super(222)Rn exposure in underground mines, the authors reviewed exposure records for NPS employees who worked in Mammoth Cave from 1976 to 1986 in order to 1) better characterize the population of NPS employees who work in caves; 2) compare the exposure patterns of cave workers with those of underground miners; and 3) determine if new NPS guidelines were needed to ensure that cave workers are not exposed to levels higher than those permitted for underground miners.
